Reginald Baylor: Amen Corner

9 January - 8 February 2025
Friedrichs Pontone is pleased to present a collection of new works by Reginald Baylor. His intricate attention to detail and playful use of color create a visual language that resonates deeply. Baylor invites viewers to explore the iconic symbols, enigmatic figures, and dreamlike landscapes that bridge the past and future.

Reginald Baylor is a contemporary artist known for his bold, geometric works that combine elements of abstraction, Pop Art, and Black cultural identity. A self-taught painter, Baylor began his artistic journey studying sculpture at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh before shifting his focus to painting, where he developed his signature style of creating intricate mazes of black lines that define vibrant blocks of color.

Baylor’s works explore themes of community, deconstruction, and the urban experience. His paintings often incorporate cultural symbols and everyday objects, creating a visual language that is both familiar and enigmatic. Amen Corner, referring to Augusta National Golf Club’s 11th, 12th, and 13th holes, exemplifies Baylor’s repossession of historical landmarks. The golf club barred African Americans from membership until the 1990s, and only welcomed female golfers in 2012. Applying bright imagery, Baylor contextualizes this legendary section of the Masters Tournament, and in many ways reclaims it. His art, often playful and colourful, invites viewers to explore the boundaries between creation and destruction, offering a glimpse into the process behind the artwork.

With a focus on accessibility, Baylor’s open studio concept in Milwaukee’s Historic Third Ward allows the public to engage directly with his creative process - a social practice that transforms Baylor to a community-facing artist.
